D6 Academy is an after-school tabletop gaming program for middle and high school students in Port Angeles.
D6 Academy gives young people a welcoming place to spend time after school, build friendships, learn new skills, and become part of a community, all through tabletop gaming.
Unlike video games, tabletop games are played face-to-face around a table. Players communicate, collaborate, make decisions, solve problems, develop strategies, and learn how to win — and lose — well.
At D6 Academy, gaming is more than something to do after school. The game is the tool. Connection, confidence, and belonging are the goal.
What Happens at D6 Academy?
Academy members have the opportunity to:
- Learn a variety of tabletop games with guidance from experienced players
- Develop strategy, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Practice communication, teamwork, patience, and good sportsmanship
- Explore how different games and game mechanics work
- Build confidence by learning, practicing, and teaching others
- Join a consistent community of other middle and high school students
- Participate in organized games, special events, and tournaments
Students don't need previous tabletop gaming experience to participate. Beginners are encouraged. We want young people to discover games they enjoy and have a place where they feel comfortable showing up.
More Than an After-School Activity
Families have many choices for helping young people find their place outside of school: athletics, music, dance, clubs, arts, and other extracurricular activities.
D6 Academy adds another option. Not every student finds their community on a field, stage, or court. Some find it sitting around a table with a group of people who are excited about the same things they are.
Tabletop gaming naturally creates opportunities to practice skills that matter far beyond the game: planning ahead, adapting when something doesn't go as expected, communicating ideas, reading social cues, taking turns, collaborating, and making decisions.
Most importantly, it gives young people a reason to put down their phones, sit across from one another, and connect in person.
A Community Built Around Play
D6 Academy is part of the larger D6 Arena gaming community in Port Angeles. Academy participants have the opportunity to learn alongside experienced tabletop gamers and become part of a positive, multigenerational community centered around shared interests.
Our goal isn't to create the best gamers.
Our goal is to create a place where young people want to belong.

Help make D6 Academy a welcoming, positive place for our youth! Adult volunteers provide an extra set of hands during Academy sessions, helping students get settled, supporting games and activities, encouraging positive interactions, and assisting D6 staff as needed. You don’t need to be a tabletop gaming expert to volunteer! We’re looking for dependable, encouraging adults with registered Academy members who enjoy spending time with young people and helping create a great community.
