Tabletop Gaming for middle and high school youth.
D6 Academy provides a safe space for youth to meet after school and engage in analog (non-electronic) organized tabletop gameplay. Tabletop games are similar to board games which are played in person, in a group setting. Some of the skills youth gain by playing these games are; communication, patience taking turns, strategic planning, deductive reasoning, and problem-solving, while building confidence. They also experience being part of a team and community of like-minded youth and adults. Tabletop Gaming is an $11 billion dollar industry, with teams and tournaments playing around the world.
Right here in Port Angeles, your youth can join the D6 Academy, learn several different specific games, study game mechanics, join a team, and play in an annual tournament.
As parents or caregivers, we often think about what activities are available for our kids outside of school hours. Mostly we think of sports, music lessons, language, the arts, and after school care. These activities are designed to establish and build confidence, strengthen muscles and stamina, feed their creative minds, and keep them engaged and safe outside of school.
According to After school Alliance; School-age children and youth spend 80 percent of their waking hours outside of school, while 1 in 5 young people in the U.S. are alone after the school day ends. High-quality after school programs promote positive youth development and offer a safe space where youth can explore their potential. Effective after school programs provide learning settings that bring a wide range of benefits to youth, families, and communities. After school programs can support social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe and supportive environment for children and youth. After school programs also provide a significant return-on-investment through increasing youth’s earning potential, improving their performance at school, and reducing crime and juvenile delinquency.
D6 Academy is a place where youth can go after school to learn and play a multitude of critical thinking games.
D6 Academy is in the process of becoming a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization and is currently sourcing grant funding to subsidize the costs. If you have any potential funding sources or information, please send it our way. Our mission is to get as many kids playing games as possible by promoting positive youth experiences through analog game play and community engagement.
